Then her group of friends comes by, one by one, coaxing Divya to forgive them. ‘For humanity forgive us’ one of the assaulters says and I am fuming. The assaulters are shameful and in front of the whole college ask for forgiveness from Divya.

But what about those who did?ġ8 minutes into the film and I am now wondering if the movie gets worse? I have grown up watching this movie and the only reason I did not recognise its problematic messaging was because I could not understand the language. Movies like this are broadcasted everywhere and so what sort of message will this give out to young viewers?Īre they worth less than the college’s reputation? What is more important – the life of the victim or this ‘reputation’ of the college? Although the movie is fictional, I could not get over this in fact, I was highly frustrated.
However, Karan is no saviour yes, he saves Divya from being a victim, but when it needs to be reported, he strongly objects because this sort of news will affect the reputation of the college. To praise the heroic act done by Karan – his entrance needs to be dynamic, gutsy and ‘manly’. The question that I began to ponder in my head during this exchange was: why was this attempt of assault needed? The principal agrees on one condition – Divya has to personally pardon their sins. ‘No sir, you have worked so hard to build this college’s reputation, for their heinous act, you are our idol – you give them the punishment instead…’Īfter this exchange between Karan and the principal, the two culprits beg not to be expelled from college because their ‘careers will be over’. ‘Throw them behind bars!’ the principal yells.
He beats the culprits and hands them over to the principal of the college.
However, just before they attempt to rape her, Divya’s boyfriend Karan comes to the rescue, saving her from the goons. She fights her attackers – and no surprise – loses her fight against them. Around 15 minutes into the movie, two fellow college boys break into the girls’ hostel and into Divya’s room. The movie casts many well-known faces from the Bollywood film industry – the male casts dominate on-screen with 11 male actors in comparison to 1 female character I did not count the three remaining female characters because they were just used as an object that their male companions held around at birthday parties, weddings and in college. Her spirit with the help of her past life lover Kapil helps her to come back for vengeance. Later on in the movie, Divya is targeted by two fellow college students which results in her committing suicide. The 21 st century Vasundhara – now known as Divya is unaware of her past life (which she, later on, is aware of) who is in a relationship with Karan ( Sunny Deol). The sage then informs Kapil to wait for his lover to reincarnate.
The story is about Kapil ( Arman Kohli) a shape-shifting snake and his lover Vasundhara ( Manisha Koirala) who disturbs the meditation of a sage and curses the couple, resulting in the death of Vasundhara. The movie revolves around reincarnation, love and revenge. I feel thankful that I did not understand what was happening when I watched it in my younger years. While the young me never realised or understood many scenes within the movie, when I re-watched it years later, I began to notice many of the scenes that should not have been there. The movie for its time had great CGI effects which imitated the special effects seen in Hollywood movies such as Terminator, Matrix and Anaconda. I grew up watching this movie and whenever it aired on tv, I would re-watch it over and over again. Janni Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani – which translates to ’Arch Enemy: A Strange Tale’ – is a 2002 Hindi (Bollywood) movie directed by Rajkumar Kohli.
